LECTURE
INSTRUCTIONS
Week 1 Progress
Specialisation of study is confirmed, which is Digital Animation.
Research on the area of study and exploring potential research topics.
Finding potential reference sources such as research journals, scholar articles on Google Scholar.
Writing the first draft of the research proposal, which focused on research rationale.
Watching the recorded lectures for week 1.
Created a google drive folder for progression purpose, with subfolders : research proposal, research design primary data, critical review, report reflection and presentation.
First draft of the research rationale is done and consulted with Dr. Hayati for corrections and amendments.
Watched problem statement recorded lecture and weekly lecture and notes.
Updating second draft of research proposal.
Second draft of the research rationale is done and consulted with Dr. Hayati for corrections and amendments.
Watched week 3 recorded lectures for research questions and objectives, and read weekly lecture notes.
Completed library session and its quiz.
Amendments for research proposal draft after consultation.
No class this week because of public holiday.
Final draft of the proposal is done.
Final presentation slides completed and submitted by the dateline, Sunday 11.59pm.
Weekly notes and lecture read.
Specific Feedback : Not yet.
General Feedback : Sites that are useful when doing research and finding scholar articles are google scholar, research gate. Choose a topic of research that aligns with your specialisation and also by using the guidelines : design principles and culture, design for future-making, social design.
Specific Feedback : The research problem proposed is too broad and time-consuming, thus not realistic. Stay focused on a specific issue and narrow down the spectrum of research.
General Feedback : Rationale is to explain why you have selected this research problem.Specific Feedback : Role itself is considered to be a big research, narrowing down to a specific problem and also choosing one type of animation to study emotion : 2D/3D etc. Study the methodology done by the researchers from your references, whether they chose a certain animation series for case study.
General Feedback : After the draft is done and finalised, transfer the information into slides for submission , dateline being by 11.59pm of next Sunday. Design your slide to match your topic.Specific Feedback : No feedback given. No class this week because of the public holiday, Malaysia Day Sept 16.
General Feedback : Submit presentation slides on google classroom.Reflection: I have been exposed to what design research methodology is about, and it actually sounds quite challenging and at the same time interesting to me. I got to decide my specialisation, which is animation, and for the first time, I started researching design related topics in a more systematic and ‘scholarly’ method. I also tried my best to write a first draft of a research proposal, which I struggled with initially, but with the help of tutorials, I was able to understand it more.
Observation: I have observed that scholar articles are much more detailed and have in-depth knowledge about a certain area of studies. Dr. Hayati and Dr. Jinchi are very specific when giving lectures, which helps me understand more about the module.
Findings: I found out that every bit of knowledge has to be researched and validated by researchers to be recognised as believable knowledge. This makes me be more cautious with knowledge consumption on the internet and find more reliable sources when learning.Reflection: I have received feedback from Dr. Hayati regarding my first proposal draft. I learned that a research topic cannot be too broad, as it is not realistic to be researched in a short period of time. I need to stay more focused on my topic and be more specific.
Observation: I have observed that all my peers have very different interests in the research area, it is very interesting to look at different topics being proposed revolving around the same area, which is animation.
Findings: I found out that my concept or understanding about research is not accurate. I was being naive to think that I would only be finding information and gathering all my findings on the internet into the essay. But research is not only about information gathering, it is also about conducting your own methodology to find a result.Reflection: I have completed my second draft of a research proposal, and my feedback from Dr. Hayati this time is that the term ‘role’ is a big research, so I have to narrow down even more to a certain problem. I also have to make up my mind on the type of animation to research : 2D, 3D, Anime, Hybrid, or Stop Motion.
Observation: I have observed that I have more knowledge and direction to complete this proposal, and it helps me to read more by finding relevant journal articles to form my problem statement.
Findings: I realised that it is quite hard to find relevant articles to my topic of research, but still I managed to find relevant articles to support my problem statement.Reflection: I have completed my proposal slides and handed in by dateline. But I actually rushed it to the last minute because I forgot to put in some citations.
Observation: I have observed that online learning can be quite hectic, especially when you are a transfer student, as I need to be more independent on my learning progress, and I need to be the one to remind and remember everything that I need to do. It helps me be more organised with my time and list down everything that I need to complete in my journal.
Findings: I realised that forming a good problem statement is challenging for me, but I tried my best to complete it.
