LECTURE

Week 1

Types of Infographics

1. Statistical infographic

If you want to visualize survey results, present data from multiple sources, or backup an argument with relevant data, then a statistical infographic is the best infographic to do that.

A statistical infographic puts the focus on your data. The layout and visuals will help you tell the story behind your data.

2. Informational infographics

An informational infographic template is the best infographic for clearly communicating a new or specialized concept, or to give an overview of a topic.

Typically, an informational infographic is divided into sections with descriptive headers. Numbering each section will help your infographic design flow.

3. Timeline infographic

Timeline infographics are the best type of infographic for visualizing the history of something, highlighting important dates, or giving an overview of events (for example, a project timeline).

Because humans tend to make sense of time spatially, a visual like a timeline infographic can help create a clearer picture of a timeframe. Visuals aids like lines, icons, photos, and labels all help to highlight and explain points in time.

4. Process infographic

While a timeline infographic will highlight points in time, a process infographic is the best infographic for providing a summary or overview of the steps in a process.

Process infographics will allow you to simplify and clarify each step. Most process infographics follow a straightforward top-to-bottom or left-to-right flow. Numbering the steps will make your process easy to follow.

5. Geographic infographic

Do you want to visualize location-based data, demographic data or large quantities of data? In those cases, a geographic infographic is your best bet.

Geographic infographics use map charts as the focus visual. Different types of map charts work better for different types of data.

6. Comparison infographic

Whether you want to compare options in an unbiased way, or you want to make one option seem better, a comparison infographic is the best infographic to do that.

Typically, comparison infographic are split down the middle vertically or horizontally, with one option on each side.

7. Hierarchical infographic

A hierarchical infographic can organize information from greatest to least.

One famous example of this is the pyramid visualizing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Humanity’s most important needs are at the base of the pyramid, ascending to humanity’s least important needs in the smallest segment at the top.

8. List infographic

If you want to share a collection of tips, or a list of resources, or a list of examples, then why not create…a list infographic!

List infographic templates are generally straightforward—the goal is to make them more eye-catching than a basic list. Visuals like icons can replace bullet points, and creative fonts and colors can make each item stand out.

9. Flowchart infographic

The flowchart infographic is a powerful infographic format  to:

  • Simplify workflows
  • Present solutions
  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Visualize chain of command
  • Share possible scenarios or consequences
  • Describe processes with multiple paths clearly and concisely
Flip 2 - LATCH

L – Location; organizing information based on space or place, such as a subway map

A – Alphabetical; a good way of organizing information if there’s no other prevailing strong organizational structure

T – Time, as in timelines, directions, or other sequential information

C – Category, as in types of information (perhaps an infographic about students might sort data first by grade, then by gender, etc.).

H – Hierarchy, as in tallest to shortest, most expensive to least, youngest to oldest.

Flip 3 - Miller's Law

In 1956, George Miller asserted that the span of immediate memory and absolute judgment were both limited to around 7 pieces of information.

Chunking, or clustering, is the function of grouping information together related by perceptual features. This is a form of semantic relation, such as types of fruit, parts of speech, or 1980s fashion. Chunking allows the brain to increase the channel capacity of the short term memory; however, each chunk must be meaningful to the individual. There are many other memory consolidation techniques. The peg memory system creates a mental peg from an association, such as a rhyme, letter, or shape. Another memory technique is the link system, where images are creating links, stories, or associations between elements in a list to be memorized.

INSTRUCTIONS

WEEK 1 progress

We were introduced to the concept of infographic and information design. Miss Norainis and Mr. Charles briefed us about our assignments and timeline of the whole module, and stressed that it is crucial for us to keep up with our work diligently so that we would not fall behind and get overwhelmed with the workload as this is a short semester.

Our first task is quantifying data, which we were instructed to find anything that can be quantified and organised to make it into a physical quantified data.

I found christmas decoration balls that we recently kept inside a box and thought that they could work for this exercise. After gotten approval from Miss Anis, I started counting and gathering them and separated them into groups with the same colours and sizes. Then I had an idea to arrange them into a christmas tree shape. After arranging, I took a photo of it and started addding information and quantified data to it.

Final Quantifying Data Exercise.

FLIP 1 Presentation - Types of Infographics

We were also instructed to make a presentation about "Types of Infographic" with maximum time limit of 8 minutes. The submission is due week 2 (Tuesday).

We made the slides and recorded our parts individually, and edited them together.

FLIP 4 PRESENTATION - Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto.

Our group is assigned to study and present about 'Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto'. I was in-charged of two subtopics, which is 'Do not glorify Aesthetics' and 'Aspire for Knowledge'. Below is our final presentation video and slides.

Infographic Redesign

We were instructed to choose a badly designed infographic to redesign, with a condition of not using Adobe softwares. We need to use online tools to redesign it. For my case, I chose to redesign the infographic on Canva.

First Attempt Infographic Redesign using Canva.

Final Infographic Redesign Exercise.

Rating for Canva :

4.5 out of 5.
Advantage : Easy to use with templates and free vectors. Some basic tools for editing and design purpose.
Disadvantage : Not as easy as Adobe softwares to manipulate with graphics. For instance, creating own vectors or editing the existing vector.

LATCH Exercise (WEEK 2)

We are briefed about our second exercise, LATCH infographic. We were given 3 options to accomplish this exercise, which are Pokemon,  FFIX Bestiary or Dinosaur. We are free to do something else if we wished to, as long there is information that is sufficient for the LATCH principles.

I decided to do Pokemon. I gather information about the pokemon regarding their type, location, hierarchy and also time (morning or night).

After that, I sketched the chosen common location of the pokemons, which is Akala Island.

Motion Graphic Exercises (Practical Class)

Week 2 - So What (Pink) Kinetic Typographic.

Practical Session online class.

Practical Session exercise progress. (WEEK 2)

We learned how to use null object to animate lyrics effectively. It makes the process easier and quicker and we don't have to animate everything word by word.

Final kinetic typography exercise

Week 4 -  Vector Character Motion Graphic

We were required to practice vector animation for week 4. I was assigned to work on B.

Separating layers on AI.

Animating process in AE.

Feedbacks

Week 2 : About the infographic redesign task, Ms. Anis gave me feedbacks about to make the title stand out more so that the hierarchy is better.
Week 3 : Regarding our kinetic typography 'Butter', Mr. Martin likes our outcome, giving a 6 out of 5 marks, which adds 1 extra points. We are very happy and grateful. Regarding the LATCH poster, Ms. Anis said that its nice and ready to go.
Week 4 : We received feedback regarding our storyboard for sex education infographic vid, Mr. Martin, overall is fine, but we have to make sure that we include the arrow indications for movements.
Week 5 : (Sex Ed) Good job on storyboard animatics, be careful on the margins for the words and titles, so that they would not be too close to the borders.
Week 6 : (Sex Ed) Nice illustrations, looking forward to seeing the animation.
Week 7 : (Sex Ed) Very consistent with delivering good work, make sure to have 80% progression by Sunday.
