Project 2 : Pitch Bible

INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURE

Week 5 : Lecture & Consultation

Today, we had a lecture session with Mr. Martin regarding what a pitch bible is about. This would be our second project of the module. We discussed about logline / concept statement.

Logline / Statement Formula

Inciting Incident + Protagonist + Action + Antagonist

Pitch Bible Lecture Slides

Week - : No Class (Public Holiday)
We were instead tasked to do our character turnaround and storyboard animatics.

Week 6 : Lecture, Tutorial
For starters, Mr Martin gave us a scenario to sketch a scene out of it, and we learned about playing with perspectives and camera movements for the scenes in animator's perspective, which we could do exaggerations. This week we learnt about what the pitch bible consists of. Using the software Scenarist, we learned how to write a script in its format. Then, Mr Martin taught us about cinematography and scene portrayal with different perspective possibilities. We also went through our first draft of character turnaround and animatics. We need to create minimum of 2 concept art for world design.

PROGRESSION

 Character Design Progress W6 :

I sketched a few version of little Mya, with different hairstyles and eyes experimenting. I never really drew a child before, I realised the body proportion for child is really different, especially hard with hands. Finally, I decided to go with the initial look, with double ponytails.

The dress was inspired by one of my childhood photo.

Character Turnaround First Ver.
First attempt character turnaround. I realised its really hard to draw these perspectives while being accurate with the features sizes. (To be amended) The character design will be toned down to ease animation process later on.

Feedback from Mr Martin : the outfit looks like a poor kid with her rich mum (lol), make the dress look more like what a rich child would wear, and make it to match the European style. As for the world concept art design, create a contrast between the initial fun world and the creepy world afterwards. Pay attention to the camera movement on what needs to be emphasized, and also be careful with the perspectives.

After class, I had fun trying out animating the character turnaround with this initial design. But also when I flipped the 45 degree drawing, I realised it was out of proportion, hence looks a bit distorted when turning. And the legs looks cacat, so needa be more accurate in the later design.

Tasks
To do (W7 -next monday) : character turnaround, trailer animatics
To do (ILW - next sunday) : concept art, storyboard

Week 7 (Class short exercise)

Mr Martin asked us to do a 10 mins sketch of a key scene that we choose according to the scenario below.

Scenario : Girl walked out of the classroom to the corridors looking at her phone. Guy came and bumped into the girl. The phone fell, but the guy managed to catch it. Then, he took a selfie with it before giving back to the girl.

Honestly I was cringing at this scenario hahaha. And then my laptop crashed, probably also from the cringe HAHAHA.

My rough sketch of the key scene in my opinion :
I focused more on the girl when she look at her phone falling because that was tragic.

WEEK 8 PROGRESS
W8 : Mya character turnaround (second version).

Colour testing.

World Concept Design (W8) :

Toy Shop exterior

Toy Shop interior (front normal)
(work in progress)

Toy Shop interior (creepy deeper section)

Shopping district normal version

Shopping district scary version

I only managed to do a greyscale shading version for the concept arts, I find perspectives really hard when it comes to environmental perspectives. As shown above, the toy shop has 3 versions of concept art : the exterior, the normal interior, and the scary deeper section. The shopping district is also done in 2 versions : the normal shopping street and the scary version that was projected through little Mya's imagination.

W9 Class Exercise :

We were given a personality situation and a mood situation to create staging effect with a sketch.

Mood : A mood is staged so that it will affect the audience. The tight composition of dark trees in a dense forest, leaning in toward a scared youth; eyes glowing from within the thick; hurried breathing filling the air; the childs eye wide open. All of these elements have been clearly staged to inspire fear.

Personality : Recognizable; an expression can be seen. A shy child would turn their eyes down, and slightly rotate their upper body away for the gaze of another child. The child's actions reveal the fact that he is shy.
