LECTURE

Week 13 : Lecture & Tutorial
Tutorial session ss.

Mr. Kamal lectured about lighting. Using cycles rendering gives more flexibility to lighting, but eevee is more predictable. For our assignment, try to have a thicker platform and walls. Use a png dummy human figure to the scene so that we can estimate how the proportion of the building or objects are. If you have progress to show don't need to wait till next class, can just show along the week through pm.

PROGRESSION

Week 12
Moodboard and reference model. Im not sure what exactly I want to do yet, but I have a strong wish to create lanterns into a scene and learn how to create lightings in a vibrant night environment scene. I think I would go for a more oriental style of cyberpunk theme.

Week 13
No progression yet. (To show sketches, block modelling progress next week)

Week 14
Idea Sketch

Block modelling progression
After creating the roof tiles using array modifier, I watched a youtube tutorial that taught how to use the lattice modifier to make the roof tiles curve uniformly as a single mesh. It is a very useful modifier as we dont have to adjust the curves to the intended shape manually using modelling, and it also keeps the mesh together very well.

I love how this modifier works, it gives you the kind of organic curve modelling with minimum effort.

progression (30/6)

Im having problem with lagging on blender probably from the heavy roof tiles mesh, but i found a way to solve it, which is to hide the heavy mesh layers first when creating other objects so that it is not lagging, and later on turning it on again when needed.

I found a tutorial on how to make simple lanterns in blender.

I append the bottle, teapot and cup models from our previous exercise and put them in as props to the scene to make it look abit livelier.

To lessen the heavy mesh and make the topology lighter for the roof mesh, I applied Decimate modifier with Planar selected, it really helps to clear up unnecessary vertices and edges and make the dace count alot lesser.
before : abt 32k face count

after : 7k face count.

modelling the smoke filter.
I decided to give some details for the air conditional smoke filter thingy at the side of the buidling.

Lantern making progression

For the lantern's hair-like strands of cloth, I try to use bezier to create it.

More modelling progresses

Detailing Progression

Done with the modelling details except for the electricity posts.

Onto experimenting with lighting.
Notable modifiers : wireframe, array, decimate.
For text : choose a chinese language font, then in edit mode paste the chinese characters, then turn fill to none, to have just the wireframe. If with fill, add modifier 'decimate' > planar to minimise the vertices. Turn the text convert to mesh.
In materials, change principle BDSF to emmision for neon effect.

Lighting is very overwhelming, I spent nearly half of the time figuring out how to lit up the lanterns because even after turning on space reflection and the transmission the lantern wont let light pass through it (i put a sphere that has emission inside the lantern), but cant see the light. At last I compromised with just letting the lantern emit light itself cuz ya its technically cyberpunk scene so it kinda fits as well, modern technology lantern (i hope..).
Ok i give up on the electric wires its taking forever....

Reflection :

Being at the final phase of this semester, all the assignments from different modules became so heavy that I can't manage to keep up with them, literally rushing everything just for the sake of every week's progression. Very little energy for the pile of workload. I am just glad that I was able to complete this task on time without too much hurdles or technical issues, although there are some compromises like giving up on the electrical wires and lantern lighting from inside. Certainly there is still so much to improve and explore in 3D Modelling, overall I could say that I have come to like 3D Modelling through this module's experience. At first I was really anxious about this module, wondering if I would be able to handle it as 3D Modelling sounds like a very advanced skill and I fear that I would not be able to complete this module as I am really slow at learning technical stuffs. But along the way I have come to enjoy the modelling process, even though with time constraints the process has been a hectic one. Although not being able to achieve good skill in this semester, I would say that I really learned a lot, from zero experience to being able to model simple things, really appreciate our lecturer Mr Kamal for being very patient and willing to demonstrate slowly the process.
