Overall Reflection
Experience : Before learning Advanced Typography, I had the stereotype thought that typography is just placing information neatly and choosing a suitable font. Although I did have some experience creating a typeface, I wasn't really good at it. After learning this module, I realised that typography has so much potential and possibilities that I have never explored in the past, and how much I could do with typography alone in design. Every task is challenging and fun, and personally, I like Typographic system and Type Exploration & Application the most. I was exposed to many different approaches in placing information when I was doing Typographic System, and as all of the systems are so unique, I had fun learning them. On the other hand, Type Exploration & Application really gave students the absolute freedom to make their unique and original ideas come true. I really enjoyed this task, as I also had the opportunity to do hands-on work, which has been a while since my Diploma, which had many hands-on work that I actually came to hate it eventually as it burns a hole in my purse because of test prints. But I guess having hands-on work once in a while is really fun. Although I enjoyed doing all the tasks, heavy workload from other modules made me lose my focus and energy. I realised that I gave more energy and motivation to the first task, and my energy gradually became less throughout the semester, and it came to the situation where only datelines were pushing me to complete the tasks assigned. I should manage my time better in the future so that I would not lose my balance between assignments again.
Observations : I love to see works and ideas presented by my peers, each of them are very inspiring and unique, you can feel that they really put a lot of effort in their work. This actually helped me to be more demanding of myself, and kept my motivation up, despite being on a full online class semester, and on top of that, my first semester at Taylor's. Listening to feedbacks given by peers and lecturer made me think critically and evaluate my own work more effectively. I still am lacking on skills and design sense, but this module really made me improve and reached some limits that I would not have thought I would be capable of.
Findings : I realised that we need to be more imaginative and explore more unusual ideas when doing any project. This helps us to be more creative and innovative. Researching and gathering ideas are some useful tools to help us generate ideas. I have also realised that I became more confident in my typography thanks to Advanced Typography and also our lecturers, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Asrizal, who are always giving us sincere feedbacks and also guiding us throughout the tasks.
